Word Counter
Live word and character counts, reading time, readability and keyword density, all computed on your device. The optional "Check for AI" sends your text to our AI Detector.
What the Word Counter does
The Word Counter gives you an instant read on a piece of writing: how many words and characters it has, how long it takes to read or read aloud, how easy it is to follow, and which words it repeats most. Everything updates as you type.
All of the counting happens in your browser: typing, pasting and reading the stats never sends your text anywhere, and your draft is autosaved only to your own browser's local storage so it survives a page refresh.
The one exception is the optional "Check for AI" button. Pressing it sends your text to our AI Detector, which analyzes it on our servers, saves the check to your History (you can delete it there at any time) and uses one of your AI Detector checks.
How it works
Paste or type your text
Drop in a draft, an essay, an email, anything you are working on. There is no minimum or sign-in required.
Read the live stats
Counts, timing and readability update as you type. The keyword table shows the words you use most, other than common ones like "the" or "and".
Send it on
If the writing needs work, send it straight to the AI Humanizer or AI Paraphraser with one click — your text carries over automatically.
Readability and keyword density explained
Flesch Reading Ease
A score out of 100 based on sentence length and syllables per word. Higher means easier to read: 90+ is very easy, 60-70 is plain English, under 30 is dense, technical writing.
Reading & speaking time
Estimated at 238 words per minute for silent reading and 150 words per minute for reading aloud — typical averages, not a guarantee for any one reader.
Keyword density
How often each significant word appears, as a share of your total word count. Common stopwords ("the", "and", "is"…) are excluded so the list reflects your actual topic.
Honest limits
Flesch Reading Ease is a rough, decades-old formula based on sentence and word length — it does not understand meaning, tone or whether your writing is actually clear. Treat the label as a starting point, not a verdict.
This tool only counts and measures — it does not check grammar or facts. "Check for AI" (available once you have at least 30 words) sends your text to our AI Detector and runs its probabilistic engine; the result is an estimate, not proof of who wrote a text.
Frequently asked questions
Is the Word Counter free?
Yes — counting is free with no sign-in and no word limit. The counts are computed in your browser, so they never use up any quota. The optional "Check for AI" button is different: it runs on our servers and uses your AI Detector allowance, the same as a check on the AI Detector page.
Do you store or see my text?
Not for counting. Every count is computed on your device, and the only copy is a local autosave in your own browser's storage so your draft survives a refresh. If you press "Check for AI", that text is sent to our servers, analyzed by the AI Detector and saved to your History so you can reopen the report — you can delete it from History at any time.
What counts as a "word"?
Sequences of letters or numbers, including contractions and hyphenated words ("isn't", "well-known") as one word each. Each CJK (Chinese/Japanese/Korean) character counts as its own word, matching how those scripts are typically counted.
How is reading time calculated?
Word count divided by 238 words per minute for reading, or 150 words per minute for reading aloud, rounded up to the next second. These are commonly used averages, not a measurement of you specifically.
Can this tool check if my writing is AI-generated?
Yes — once you have at least 30 words, "Check for AI" sends your text to our AI Detector and shows a summary here. It counts as one AI Detector check and is saved to your History. "Open full report" takes that same result to the AI Detector for the sentence-by-sentence breakdown, without running a second check.
